Typical Applications & Industry Use Cases
Industries Served
Chemical processing
strong acids, alkalis, corrosive solvents, and reactive media.
Petrochemical and refinery
solvent circulation, corrosive hydrocarbons, chemical feed systems.
Pharmaceutical, biotech, and specialty chemicals
applications requiring chemically inert wetted surfaces.
Water and wastewater treatment
corrosive cleaning agents, chemical dosing, and aggressive effluents.
Equipment & Use-Case Scenarios
- Centrifugal pumps and mixers handling corrosive, high-purity, or solvent-rich fluids.
- Equipment where elastomer secondary seals degrade quickly due to chemical exposure.
- Applications involving thermal or chemical cycling — PTFE bellows tolerate fluctuating conditions.
- Installations where shaft misalignment or axial movement occurs — bellows design provides natural compliance.
Why It Fits These Applications
- PTFE bellows provide excellent resistance to aggressive chemicals and solvents.
- No sliding elastomeric O-rings in the wetted area — eliminating a major failure point.
- Multi-spring loading maintains even, stable face pressure regardless of shaft deflection or thermal expansion.
- The replaceable bellows design improves maintenance ease and extends the usable service life.
- Ideal for applications requiring long run-time, low maintenance, and high chemical compatibility.
Installation Guidelines
Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly — shaft, seal chamber, and gland face must be free of corrosion or scoring.
Install the EMD-32 carefully to avoid twisting or deforming the PTFE bellows.
Ensure the bellows sits relaxed (not stretched or compressed) when the gland is tightened.
Confirm all process conditions — chemical compatibility, temperature, and pressure — are within the seal’s ratings.
Perform a slow, controlled startup and examine for leaks or abnormal face contact before full operation.
Maintenance & Inspection Best Practices
- Inspect bellows for signs of chemical attack, cracking, or deformation during scheduled shutdowns.
- Examine seal faces for wear, scoring, or abrasion; replace as needed.
- Maintain a log of temperature, pressure, run hours, and fluid chemistry to identify patterns that affect seal life.
- Avoid running dry or in low-lubricity conditions — even with PTFE, seal faces require proper fluid film.
- Use filtration or cleanliness control where solids may be present, as particulates can damage seal faces.
Service & Support Options
- Pre-installation review to ensure correct material selection and compatibility with operating conditions.
- Spare bellows and seal-face kits to support quick on-site rebuilds and reduce downtime.
- Commissioning assistance to verify alignment, bellows positioning, and early leak detection.
- Preventive maintenance programs that include inspections, parts replacement intervals, and performance tracking.
- Support for an upgrade path if future operating conditions require stronger materials or alternative seal designs.
