ANFD FDD-500BB Double Seal for Industrial Applications
ANFD FDD-500BB Double Seal for Industrial Applications
Overview
HydroMax Seal FDD-500BB | Double Cartridge Seal for ANFD Applications
The FDD-500BB is a multi-spring double cartridge seal with hydraulically balanced seal faces. The “500BB” design features an integral bearing, metal bellows, and 316 stainless steel wetted parts.
This Rotary Pusher Double Cartridge Seal includes monolithic seal faces, an integral bearing, and O-ring secondary seals, designed specifically for Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryers (ANFDs).
The mechanical seal incorporates multi-springs, a set screw drive, and quench and drain port connections. It accommodates significant axial shaft movement using a specially engineered inboard metal bellows.
The seal has a number of design features, comes factory assembled and tested, and has been successfully installed in hundreds of applications.

WARNING:
The safe seal performance characteristics are typical values for each variable in isolation. The individual upper limit values of speed, pressure, and temperature should NOT be used in combination.
Typical Applications & Industry Use Cases
The FDD-500BB Double Cartridge Seal for ANFD Applications is specifically engineered for robust operation in rotating shaft systems that require axial movement, high-pressure and high-temperature loads, and stringent leakage control. Its double-cartridge configuration, balanced seal faces, integral bearing, and metal bellows design make it ideal for process-critical uses in filtration and drying equipment.
Industries Served
Pharmaceutical & Fine Chemicals
Agitated-nutsche filter/dryer (ANFD) installations, solvent handling, batch drying.
Chemical & Petrochemical
Reactors, mixers, dryers where the shaft expands or shifts, and the reliability of the seal is non-negotiable.
Mining, Mineral Processing & Slurry Systems
Where large axial movement and abrasive media are present.
Engineering & General Process Plants
Anywhere a heavy-duty double seal is required on a moving agitator shaft.
Equipment & Use-Case Scenarios
- ANFD systems with vertical paddle movement, where the inboard metal bellows accommodate the shaft travel.
- Horizontal mixers/dryers where the shaft undergoes both rotation and axial displacement.
- Closed-vessel drying and filtration units operating under low-pressure or vacuum environments.
- High-speed agitators require balanced faces and minimal leakage.
Why It Fits These Applications
- The metal bellows and integral bearing allow large axial shaft movement while maintaining face alignment.
- Balanced seal faces and robust cartridge construction give dependable performance under harsh conditions.
- Customisable material options (316 SS, exotic alloys) support corrosive or high-temperature media.
Installation Guidelines
Ensure the shaft and mounting surface are clean, straight, and within tolerance before installing the cartridge seal.
Align the bleed/quench and drain ports correctly with your support system layout (Plan 52/53/54 options).
Install the cartridge without undue forcing of the bellows section — allow the metal bellows to absorb axial movement naturally.
Once the cartridge is seated, secure the set-screw drive as specified by HydroMax, then engage your gland/clamp per standard procedure.
Commission barrier or quench fluid support (if required) and ensure fluid temperatures/pressures are within operational limits.
Maintenance & Inspection Best Practices
- Conduct periodic visual inspection of the seal chamber for signs of leakage, wear, or contamination deposits.
- Monitor barrier fluid and flush circuits: maintain correct pressure, flow, and temperature stability.
- Inspect metal bellows for fatigue or signs of deformation, especially in high-temperature or aggressive media environments.
- At every planned shutdown, remove the cartridge (if practical) to inspect the seal faces and secondary seals; replace O-rings and gaskets as standard.
- Keep a documented service log, noting shaft speed changes, media changes, and seal face replacement history. This product is built to last, but, like all mechanical seals, service life is impacted by operating conditions.
Service & Support Options
HydroMax Seal offers a full suite of support services for the FDD-500BB model:
- Pre-installation consultation and custom configuration (bellows length, material selection, flushing plan).
- On-site or remote installation guidance and commissioning support.
- Spare parts kits (seal faces, O-rings, gaskets) tailored to the cartridge design.
- Refurbishment and upgrade pathways — e.g., switching to exotic-alloy wetted parts or enhanced seal support systems if process conditions evolve.
- Long-term maintenance programmes to help you maximise uptime, control cost, and streamline replacement scheduling.
With proper installation and maintenance, the FDD-500BB offers high reliability, low downtime, and excellent performance in even the most challenging ANFD, drying, and filtration environments.
