SPW682-131 High-Performance Single Cartridge Seal for Pumps
SPW682-131 High-Performance Single Cartridge Seal for Pumps
Overview
HydroMax Seal SPW682-131 | API682-Compliant Single Cartridge Seal for Plan 31 Systems
The SPW682-131 is a single-cartridge mechanical seal designed in full compliance with API682 specifications, making it ideal for critical applications in the Oil & Gas sector. Featuring integral vortex breakers and a dual outboard restriction bush (segmented and floating), this stationary seal is optimized for API Plan 31 arrangements on API610 V8 onwards process pumps.
Delivered as a complete cartridge solution, the SPW682-131 is factory-assembled and tested for performance in abrasive and high-speed applications involving solids-laden process fluids.
Product Description
Design Features
- Flush orifice for Plan 31 – provides controlled fluid flow that avoids “shot blasting” the seal face when handling solids
- Quench and Drain orifices for Plan 62 or 52 – steam or buffer fluid is guided to the inboard face by an integrated deflector in the gland
- Large 1/2″ NPT seal port connections for efficient flow control
- Gland plate with integrated vortex breakers – ensures controlled turbulence and reduces solids recirculation
- API682-compliant radial clearances between rotary and stationary elements
- Monolithic seal faces enhance high-temperature reliability
- Stationary seal design with self-aligning stationary face – supports high-speed operation
- Multi-spring configuration with springs located out of the process fluid
- Dual outboard restriction bush design – segmented + floating bush combo for superior leakage control and pressure stability
- Compatible with the HydroMax Plan 31 Cyclone Separator System and the Sample Collection Pot

Equipment & Use-Case Scenarios
- API Plan 31 mechanical seal support on process pumps
- Services involving fluids with suspended solids or abrasive particles
- Installations where improved hydraulics and flush fluid distribution are required
- Applications benefiting from a cartridge seal that reduces assembly error and downtime
Why It Fits These Applications
- Plan 31 flush orifice: Helps direct flush fluid in a way that maintains effective seal lubrication and cooling
- Vortex breaker design: Improves fluid flow behavior in the seal chamber and helps minimise suspended particles impact
- Compact cartridge construction: Fits into tight gland spaces while delivering robust sealing performance
- Hydraulically balanced face design: Enhances pressure handling and operational stability
- Multi-spring configuration: Provides even loading across seal faces and isolates springs from the process fluid
- Monolithic seal faces: Improve wear resistance and performance in elevated temperature services
Installation Guidelines
Pre-Installation Preparation
Clean and examine the pump shaft, seal chamber bore, and gland surfaces thoroughly. Remove corrosion, debris, and surface irregularities to ensure proper alignment and full sealing surface contact.
Cartridge Installation
Install the SPW682-131 cartridge into the seal housing. Confirm that the Plan 31 flush orifice and the vortex breaker features are correctly oriented for your fluid piping plan. Secure the cartridge to the specified torque.
Alignment & Fit
Verify that the stationary seat and rotating faces are properly aligned within the housing to maintain uniform contact and reliable sealing.
Startup Procedure
Start flush fluid circulation before bringing the equipment up to operating speed and pressure. Monitor the seal area for leakage, vibration, or abnormal temperature before placing the equipment into full duty.
Maintenance & Inspection Best Practices
- Routine Visual Checks: Inspect around the seal area for signs of fluid leakage, vibration, or abnormal heat during operation
- Seal Face Monitoring: During scheduled maintenance, check seal faces for wear, scoring, or deposits
- Vortex Breaker Assessment: Examine vortex breaker features for particle buildup or erosion that may restrict flow
- Operating Logs: Maintain records of pressure, temperature, and speed to support predictive maintenance
- Spare Parts Planning: Keep replacement seal faces, secondary seals, springs, and cartridge components available to minimise downtime
Service & Support Options
- Application Review: Confirm that selected materials and seal configuration are compatible with fluid chemistry and operating conditions
- Installation Assistance: Technical guidance can help ensure correct cartridge orientation and secure seating
- Preventive Maintenance Scheduling: Establish inspection and replacement intervals based on duty cycles and service history
- Seal Upgrade Evaluation: If operating conditions become more demanding, consider alternate materials or enhanced designs
