Single Mixer Seal: GLR-170L
Single Mixer Seal: GLR-170L
Overview
HydroMax Seal GLR-170L | Single Dry Mechanical Seal for Glass Lined Reactors
The GLR-170L is a multi-spring, single dry mechanical seal assembly with a bearing housing and drive collar.
This Glass Lined Reactor (GLR) External Single Dry Cartridge Seal Assembly is designed for stepped shaft applications. It features a long working length, monolithic rotary seal face, and monolithic clamped stationary seal face.
The integral bearing is sealed for life; therefore, no oiler is provided with the 170L model.
The seal has a number of design features, comes factory assembled and tested, and has been successfully installed in hundreds of applications.

Typical Applications & Industry Use Cases
The GLR-170L Single Mixer Mechanical Seal is a single, multi-spring mixer seal designed for use on agitators, blenders, and mixing equipment where sealing reliability and ease of maintenance are important. Its robust spring-loaded construction and balanced seal faces provide stable performance in mixers handling a range of fluids, including light-solids suspensions and moderate-viscosity liquids.
Industries Served
Chemical and process industries
mixing vessels, reactors, and blending tanks.
Food and beverage processing
mixers and agitators in liquid food, beverage, and ingredient blending.
Pharmaceutical and biotech
mixing systems for non-sterile product blending.
Water treatment and effluent mixing
agitators in clarifiers, aerators, and equalization tanks.
General industrial applications
where mixers operate under moderate speeds and fluid conditions.
Equipment & Use-Case Scenarios
- Top-entry and side-entry mixers where axial and radial shaft movement must be accommodated.
- Vessels operating with moderate agitation forces and variable fluid conditions.
- Mixing applications where a simple, reliable single seal is sufficient and dual seal complexity is unnecessary.
- Systems where occasional maintenance access is standard and rapid seal replacement is desirable.
Why It Fits These Applications
- The multi-spring design ensures even face loading during dynamic shaft movement.
- Balanced seal faces support stable operation across typical mixer speeds and moderate pressures.
- The GLR-170L’s compact profile fits a variety of mixer housings with limited seal chamber space.
- Simple single-seal configuration reduces maintenance time and complexity compared with dual-seal designs.
Installation Guidelines
Prepare the shaft and housing
Before installation, thoroughly clean the mixer shaft, seal chamber bore, and gland face. Remove any corrosion, scoring, deposits, or debris to ensure proper contact surfaces.
Install carefully
Slide the GLR-170L seal assembly onto the shaft without forcing or twisting the elastomer bellows or springs. Ensure correct orientation and that the seal faces are aligned.
Secure and align
Engage any set-screw or drive-screw features per specification, then tighten gland or clamp bolts evenly to prevent face misalignment.
Initial run-in
Start the mixer at low speed and monitor for leaks, vibration, or noise. Verify stable operation before progressing to full mixing duty.
Maintenance & Inspection Best Practices
- Routine inspections: During scheduled maintenance, inspect seal faces for scoring, wear, or deposits. Check elastomer components for hardening, swelling, or degradation.
- Monitor operating conditions: Track mixer performance for temperature rise, unusual noise, or vibration around the seal — these can indicate wear or misalignment.
- Operational logs: Maintain records of operating parameters, such as fluid properties, shaft speed, mixing duration, and temperature cycles, to plan maintenance intervals.
- Proactively replace worn seal faces or elastomer components before failure to prevent unplanned downtime and protect the mixer internals.
- Fluid cleanliness: Keep process fluids within acceptable cleanliness levels to minimise abrasive wear on seal faces.
Service & Support Options
- Specification review: Confirm that the GLR-170L’s materials and configuration match your fluid chemistry, operating speeds, pressures, and temperatures for optimal performance.
- Spare parts availability: Stock replacement seal faces, elastomer,s and mounting hardware to reduce maintenance turnaround time.
- Installation assistance: Support for initial alignment and seating can improve first-run performance and life expectancy.
- Preventive maintenance planning: Establish periodic inspection schedules and part replacement plans based on actual use conditions.
- Upgrade guidance: If operating conditions become more demanding (higher speeds, abrasive fluids, elevated temperatures), consider higher-duty mixer seals or alternative seal configurations for enhanced reliability.
